Welcome to the Greener Web Challenge

The Greener Web Challenge is a pioneering research collaboration between Aston Business School and the School of Economics at the University of Nottingham.

Our planet faces intensifying environmental challenges, exacerbated by the rapid expansion of internet technologies such as server hosting, cloud computing and e-waste. This initiative aims to illuminate the environmental impact of one such digital technology: websites. By taking a sector-specific approach, we have developed tailored benchmarks for specific business sectors to assess and compare their digital footprint accurately among similar businesses. A second goal is to create accessible resources to guide businesses on reducing their website’s environmental impact without compromising its quality and value.

As part of our universities’ commitment to knowledge exchange, and thanks to the generous funding from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) for our programme, we can offer businesses, including yours, access to our comprehensive insights, industry benchmarking and a suite of resources at no cost to you. Our primary aim is not to sell services but rather to share valuable insights and tools for self-improvement, all designed to support your efforts in enhancing digital sustainability.

By joining the Greener Web Challenge, you gain free access to:

  • Recommendations for reducing your website’s carbon footprint
  • A self-paced mini-programme on how to make your website greener
  • Actionable steps for improvement with no web-development expertise required
  • Monthly updates to track your progress.
